Hello everybody,

Today, we again attended an interesting lesson by our nice and kind teacher, Mr. Kent Cheong on CSS(Cascading Style Sheets).

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML.

CSS is designed primarily to enable the separation of document content from document presentation, including elements such as the layout, colors, and fonts. This separation can improve content accessibility, provide more flexibility and control in the specification of presentation characteristics, enable multiple pages to share formatting, and reduce complexity and repetition in the structural content CSS can also allow the same markup page to be presented in different styles for different rendering methods. The author of a document typically links that document to a CSS style sheet, readers can use a different style sheet, perhaps one on their own computer, to override the one the author has specified. I was also appointed to be the Infocomm Studies rep!

Yesterday,
I attended yet another information-packed lesson by our friendly IS teacher Mr Kent Cheong. In that interesting lesson, I learnt a lot about designing and creating a webpage with HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language). At first, we learnt about the structure of HTML: html, head and body. I have already memorised this wonderful and ingenious structure by heart as I had previous blogging experience in which I designed my own webpage. The head contains information about the webpage, like the title of the webpage. Finally the body contains the main content of the webpage. Do take note that these wonderful tags must come in a pair with a closing tag.

Other than that, we also learnt many other types of tags: p, for paragraphing,h1/h2, etc for heading,a href for linking, img for inserting images, br for leaving a line and finally hr for inserting a horizontal line etc.

We aksi learnt how to create a html using Notepad. I had fun writing out the html format and then seeing it in a webpage format. I think that what Mr. Cheong taught was very useful and I enjoyed trying it out for myself.

Next week, I hope that Mr Cheong can teach us more about HTML.

My First IS Lesson: Internet and WWW
Hello everybody,

I just attended my Infocomm Studies by our friendly teacher Mr. Kent Cheong. We learnt a lot from him. We learnt about the history of the Internet. The Internet became functional in 1969. It was a Networking project by Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency. It was to allow scientists at different locations to share information then. However, during 1969 there were only 4 host nodes. Now, there are more than 200 million host nodes. This shows the great improvement of technology over the years. The Internet is a public, cooperative and independent network. We can connect to the Internet through slow-speed technology and high-speed technology. For slow-speed technology, the connection to the Internet must be established each time the user logs on. While for the high-speed technology, the connection is always on whenever the computer is running, although it costs a bit more than the slow-speed technology. There are three ways of accessing the Internet, through the ISP (Internet Service Provider), OSP and the Wireless Internet Service Provider. We also learnt that a domain name is the text version of IP(Internet Protocol) address. The IP address is the number that identifies the computer or device connected to the Internet.

Next we also learnt about the WWW(World Wide Web). It is normally called Web. It is a collection of electronic documents from all over the world. These electronic documents can text, sounds, videos etc. We learnt that downloading is the process whereby the computer receives information from another source. The unique address for the web page is called the URL(Uniform Resource Locator). A link in a built-in connection to another web-page location. There are 9 types of basic websites, they are: Portal, News, Inforational, Business, Educational, Entertainment, Advocacy, Blog and Personal. An educational website teaches us information that is valuable to us. People create a blog to write their reflections or opinion on a particular subject. They may also use the blog as an online journal. A personal website is maintained by a private individual. We also learnt that a thumbnail is a smaller version of a larger picture. We learnt about a function on the web called the E-mail(Electronic Mail). It is a form of communication where one sends a message or a file to another. We also learnt about Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. Web 1.0 is a website which only the author can update. While the Web 2.0 is a website which allows both the writer and the readers to update or post their comments. In the mordern age, we tend to use alot of the Internet, so when using the multiple functions on the web, we have go by the code of acceptable behaviors. We should treat others as the way we want others to treat us. For an example, we do not want others to past bad comments about us, so we do not do that to others too. This way, netizens would have a mutual respect for each other.
